VCU Institute For Contemporary Art

Date of Sketch: January 11, 2011

Prior to architect selection this sketch proposed an L-shaped promenade which loops and connects lobby, exhibit galleries,  performance space, sculpture terrace, cafe and offices, with access at the corner or from the treed parking court to the roof.  Sited at the busiest traffic intersection in Richmond, this building captures the dynamic movement of its historic location and of the University itself.

Zephyr Hotel, Butte County, CA

Date of Sketch: February 28, 2004

Concept hotel at a crossing of the Feather River Canyon along the historic Union Pacific route, with a future Oroville on the horizon.  "The Inextinguishable" (Symphony #4) by Carl Neilsen, is played in four connected movements without breaks, referencing the First World War and expressing the "elemental will to live."  The Zephyr Hotel is depicted here as one building in two parts echoing the monumental drama of two sets of timpani battling one another in an orchestral landscape.

River Center Library, Baton Rouge

Date of Sketch: October 6, 2012

This pre-Concept was very early in the design process with little programmatic content. The site, sketched at the top of page, is basically square, and the building at the bottom depicts a raised structure which provides maximum shade in a hot, sunny and rainy environment. The Library, now under construction, still retains its raised form and sheltering lower floor to provide a canopy above a shaded civic open space.
