Zephyr Hotel, Butte County, CA
Date of Sketch: February 28, 2004
Concept hotel at a crossing of the Feather River Canyon along the historic Union Pacific route, with a future Oroville on the horizon. "The Inextinguishable" (Symphony #4) by Carl Neilsen, is played in four connected movements without breaks, referencing the First World War and expressing the "elemental will to live." The Zephyr Hotel is depicted here as one building in two parts echoing the monumental drama of two sets of timpani battling one another in an orchestral landscape.
